I would like to share with you a short story about the person I am participating for in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure – her name is Elaine Gural better known to many as “Granny.” Unfortunately Elaine passed away very unexpectedly on Thursday, Sept.19 at 4:30 p.m.  Not only was Elaine a very dear friend of mine but she has also been the biggest inspiration in my life. Although Elaine lost her fight, I would like to share a little more about her life and the impact she had.

Elaine always saw her glass as half full never half empty, despite facing breast cancer twice and bone cancer. Since 2006, she has accepted any test, treatment, and change in lifestyle that has been asked of her. She was also a major support to others who are facing cancer, complete with a smile on her face and the most positive attitude possible. Elaine never thought she was doing anything extraordinary, but she was a true inspiration to all who were battling cancer.  I was very blessed to be able to witness Elaine receive the “Medal of Courage” in 2011, a national award given to one person each year by the Canadian Cancer Society; what a most worthy recipient she is.

Elaine and her husband Ronald never had a family of their own but over the 30+ years she was employed at Home Hardware in Melfort, she trained many young high school students (who all called her Granny).  These young people have now all grown up, many with families of their own, but they all kept in touch with her. She called them her “kids.” Elaine always had time to stop and visit with people of which she knew many. This was evident by the almost 700 people who attended her funeral service on Sept. 26.

Although Elaine’s journey is now taking place in heaven, she has left a mark on so many people.  Her motto was always “life is good” and even though it’s heartbreaking not to have her here anymore, one must keep in mind that life is good and my own life was blessed by having her in it.
