The Hughes Hugs Team is running for Tim Hughes’ mother, Nancy, who has been living with breast cancer for 10 years. Today, the Hughes Hugs Team has 15 members, but there are countless nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends who provide encouragement and help raise funds from local businesses, churches as well as their friends and neighbours. Tim is a fitness instructor and he is inspired to see Canadians of all ages and abilities participate in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.
Tim and team have been actively fundraising in the lead-up to the Run and Tim has been able to tie the team’s efforts back to his own field of work. Tim expressed the following:
(In my fundraising efforts) I highlighted the research of Patrick Lee at Dalhousie that the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation funds. Since I work in science research my colleagues can relate to the cost of research and can easily see the link between their donation and the results.
People are slow to believe me when I tell them that’s my team in the photo on the promotions and in the newspaper – we’re not used to locals getting in the big picture!! I have to explain why I’m not in the photo. I get no sympathy when I tell them I was sailing in the Caribbean when the photo was taken. Hopefully that’s not cutting into my profits. Everyone thinks it’s a great photo.

We’ve got 15 team members registered this year. We’ve had a few injuries. My cousin is sidelined so didn’t register – he’ll be joining Mom in the cheering ranks at the finish line. I’ve got an injured foot so I am slowed to a walk not a run. We’ve picked up a couple new members, some young blood to replace us “veterans” whose body parts are wearing out. We’re all working on our own fundraising now; having tapped out our common connections, we’ve been out hitting-up colleagues and neighbours. One team member, Dave Power, has been hanging in the ranks of the Top Five online fundraisers on the Halifax website. The top Halifax online fundraiser is on the team of a good friend of mine – another team organized out of Kentville – so we’re both pleased to have our guys up there in the ranks! I’m trying to get the final push to get up to our goal of $6000. We’re already planning the post run celebrations. Here’s hoping for decent weather!
Looking forward to a successful, fun run!
Cheers,
Tim
